Russia will continue to provide assistance to African countries in ensuring food security. This was announced on May 26 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

He noted that for many years Russia had supported the African peoples in their struggle for freedom and independence, and had also actively contributed to the formation of young states and their socio-economic development. Lavrov stressed that the Russian side would continue to strengthen Africa's position as an original and influential center of global development.

"We will continue to assist interested African countries in strengthening their defense capabilities and countering terrorism, ensuring food and energy security," the minister said at a reception on the occasion of Africa Day.

On March 6, Lavrov said that Russia would continue to increase its assistance, in particular, in training military personnel in Africa and strengthening law enforcement agencies to enhance the ability of African friends to combat the threats of terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime in the region.

Prior to that, on February 11, Mikhail Bogdanov, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister, told Izvestia that Moscow was ready to help strengthen its own anti-crisis potential of African states. He added that the Russian Federation conducts annual training courses for African peacekeepers.
