"Planet Earth: harmony of man and nature" became the main theme of the XI Nevsky International Ecological Congress, which took place on May 22-23 in St. Petersburg. The Congress once again confirmed its status as an authoritative discussion platform, bringing together representatives of government, science, business, youth and environmental communities from all over the world. The result of the joint work was the development of joint solutions in the field of sustainable development and environmental protection.

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants, organizers and guests of the Congress, which were read out by Alexander Gutsan, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the North-Western Federal District, at the plenary session. The Head of State stressed that the motto of the Congress reflects the international community's commitment to environmental conservation as an essential element of sustainable development. Vladimir Putin also noted the key importance of the national project "Ecological well-being", pointed out the importance of applying environmental standards, observing the regime of protection of natural territories and building a closed-loop economy.

In 2025, the Congress brought together more than 1,700 participants and media representatives, about 420 of whom were foreign representatives from 75 countries. The Congress was attended by about 310 representatives of federal and regional executive and legislative authorities of the Russian Federation, five heads of federal services and agencies, and three heads of a constituent entity of the Russian Federation.

The plenary session "Ecology of the new Reality: Challenges and opportunities" became the central event of the business program of the Congress. Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly Valentina Matvienko recalled that environmental issues and environmental protection are common to every inhabitant of the planet: "No matter how many thousands of kilometers our countries may be separated, environmental problems know no state borders. They concern every continent, every country and every person. We are convinced that there can be no place for political pressure and manipulation in the work on the green agenda. Russia is clearly fulfilling all its international obligations in the field of nature protection. Within the framework of the national ecology project, over the past five years alone, significant results have been achieved in terms of eliminating accumulated environmental damage, cleaning and restoring river systems, and reducing pollution."

"The dynamic development of the economy increases man's responsibility to nature. In this regard, effective management of natural resources is important for any state and for every person. Russia actively advocates consolidating the efforts of the international community in the field of ecology. We support United Nations initiatives and work within the framework of more than 20 conventions and agreements. We have common challenges, and it is all the more valuable that at the Congress we can outline the vectors of joint further actions," said Dmitry Patrushev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

"The attitude of citizens and businesses towards environmental issues is changing for the better. This was made possible by Russia's systemic policy aimed at popularizing traditional values. Protecting and protecting nature is the same as loving your family and Homeland. At the initiative of the President, systematic work is underway to address urgent environmental protection issues. Many enterprises, including industry leaders, are busy retrofitting production facilities in favor of low-carbon solutions. Close attention is paid to the recycling and recycling of packaging materials. Collectively, this brings Russia closer to achieving its strategic goal of creating a closed—loop economy," said Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation and Executive Secretary of the NMEC Organizing Committee.

The program of the second day of NMEC-2025 includes issues of urban ecology and international partnership. The youth program of the XI Nevsky International Ecological Congress from the Ecosystem Movement and Rosmolodezh gathered participants from different regions of Russia and from abroad. The program included five thematic sessions where experts, scientists, volunteers and business representatives discussed how to support young professionals in the field of sustainable development.

On the final day, the winners of the All-Russian clean-up days were awarded. Letters of thanks from the President of Russia were presented by Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev. The winners were determined in five nominations: "The most active public organization", "The most active region", "The largest event", "The most active company", and "Eco-education". In total, 5,610 events were held in 89 regions of Russia with the participation of more than 572,950 people. The campaign "We are for cleanliness" was held in the period from April 18 to April 27, 2025 in 89 regions of the Russian Federation.

Nevsky International Ecological Congress became carbon-neutral for the first time. This was made possible thanks to the climate projects of the SIBUR petrochemical company, which will transfer carbon units to compensate for the carbon footprint of the congress through the Thread of Nature platform.
