Vienna's Supreme Regional Court for Criminal Cases has granted the appeal of former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in the case of perjury. This was reported on May 26 by the newspaper Die Presse.

"The Vienna Higher Regional Court on Monday overturned the verdict in the first instance of ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on charges of giving false testimony before a parliamentary committee," the material says.

At the same time, the sentence for former Austrian Cabinet Minister Bernhard Bonelli remained in force. He received a six-month suspended sentence, clarifies "Газета.Ru ".

In February 2024, Kurz was sentenced to eight months probation for making false statements to the parliamentary commission on the ÖBAG case. He and Bonelli have appealed their sentences.

On August 18, 2023, the Austrian Prosecutor's Office for Economics and Corruption announced that a criminal case had been opened against Kurz for giving false testimony. The case also involved Bonelli and a third suspect, whose name was not disclosed. They were accused of making false statements as defendants, in particular, in connection with the interrogation about the creation of ÖBAG and the composition of the board and supervisory board of this company.

Due to the investigation of the anti-corruption prosecutor's office in this case, Kurz resigned as Chancellor of Austria in October 2021 in order to avoid political chaos in the country. After that, in December of the same year, he resigned from the post of chairman of the Austrian People's Party. Thus, the former chancellor left Austrian politics.
