- The media learned about the EU's plans to withdraw from the program of assistance to Ukrainian refugees

The European Union (EU) countries are considering the possibility of withdrawing from the Temporary protection Directive, which provides legal support to Ukrainian migrants. This was reported on May 26 by the Euractiv portal, citing sources.
"Negotiations on exit strategies are now gaining momentum behind closed doors," the portal quoted the EU diplomat as saying.
The legislative act was approved in March 2022. Initially, its validity was supposed to expire in March 2025, but later it was extended for another year, until March 2026.
It clarifies that EU member states may consider withdrawing from the directive on June 12-13 at a meeting of the Council on Internal Affairs and Justice. According to the portal, most of them are in favor of extending the directive, but experts warn of the low probability of such an outcome from a legal point of view.
"We are already standing on thin ice in connection with the latest extension," said Martin Wagner, senior policy adviser at the International Center for Migration Policy Development.
He noted that the European Union should consider alternatives or other ways to get out of "temporary protection." The EU may consider the creation of a new legal instrument as a possible solution to the problem, but this is unlikely.
On May 25, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stoecker announced that the EU needs to review the rules for granting asylum, as the norms and rules in force in the association no longer correspond to their original concept. The Austrian government believes that EU rules on family reunification have provoked a wave of youth crime and led to schools failing to cope with the influx of children who do not speak German.
