Researchers from the Aeromobility Directorate and the Unmanned Aviation Systems Center of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed the first universal external pilot station. It makes it possible to control unmanned aircraft (UAS) of airplane, helicopter, multirotor and hybrid types.

The device is a portable unit that includes an eight-inch LCD touchscreen, a control panel and a weatherproof and weather-resistant housing. The battery allows it to hold a charge for up to five hours of active operation.

"Controlling the drone starts even before takeoff. The operator needs to set the route, specify key points, altitude, speed and additional tasks. For example, turning on the camera, taking pictures, stopping in the air. All this data is transmitted to the drone's control system. As soon as it rises into the air, a continuous exchange of information with the ground station begins," said Maxim Kalyagin, one of the developers and chief designer of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Center at MAI.

He explained that the device communicates with the drone using a radio signal. The station receives data from the drone about coordinates, altitude, speed, battery charge, operation of all systems. At the same time, the operator can send commands to the drone at any time. The station makes it possible to easily form and control the flight trajectory of the UAV and receive data from payloads in the operational mode.
