Hanoverian bank Sparkasse Hannover blocked the account of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder a year ago due to fears of sanctions. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on May 25, citing sources.

"According to the research, Sparkasse Hannover blocked his account for certain transfers," the article says.

It is noted that the account was blocked back in June last year.

According to the newspaper, in a letter to Schroeder, the bank expressed concerns that the organization could be sanctioned by the United States if funds were credited to the ex-chancellor's account from the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. At the same time, it is clarified that the politician himself is not included in any sanctions list.

The newspaper added that since 2016, as chairman of the company's board of directors, Schroeder has received about 200 thousand euros annually.

On May 22, Bild reported that Schroeder still positively evaluates the Nord Stream 2 project, and also calls for the "correct" import of natural gas from Russia.
