The warming of relations between the US and Syrian authorities has a negative impact on Israel, which previously attacked Damascus and its surroundings. This was reported on May 25 by The New York Times.

According to the newspaper, in the months since former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad lost his power, Israel has carried out more than 700 attacks on the country. However, everything changed on May 14, 2025, when US President Donald Trump met with the new president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and announced plans to lift all sanctions against the country. After this meeting, Israeli strikes on Syria "practically stopped."

"Trump's unexpected embrace with al-Sharaa not only provided the new Syrian leader with an unexpected lifeline, but also apparently undermined the attempts of the hardline Israeli government to take advantage of the instability in Syria and the weakness of the new government to prevent the emergence of another anti-Israeli neighbor," the article says.

According to the newspaper, before Trump's meeting with al-Sharaa, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his top aides were "determined" to deprive the new Syrian president of access to the arsenal of heavy weapons accumulated by the Assad government.

According to The New York Times, the new Syrian government has not attacked Israel since coming to power and declared that the country is "tired of war and wants to live in peace with all countries."

The olive branch extended by Trump to al-Sharaa complicates Israel's strategy in Syria and is the latest example of how American foreign policy is changing the face of the Middle East.

According to former military personnel and analysts, one of Israel's goals in Syria is to limit Turkey's influence in that country.

White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said on May 14 that Trump had called on the Syrian leader to normalize relations with Israel within the framework of the "Abraham Agreements." The American leader also called on the Syrian president to order all foreign terrorists, including Palestinian ones, to leave the country.
