- The doctor told people with pale skin about ways to protect themselves from the sun in the summer
People with pale skin have an increased risk of sunburn in the summer, even when using sunscreen. Anna Matveeva, a dermatovenerologist at the Scandinavian Health Center, told about this on May 25.
"In people with skin types I–II, the epidermis contains little melanin— a pigment that helps block ultraviolet light. These phototypes include light—skinned people with blue, gray or green eyes and red or blond hair," the expert said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
According to her, the skin of people with these phototypes practically does not tan and burns when exposed to the sun for a short time. She noted that with this feature, pheomelanin prevails in humans, a pigment that is less effective in protecting against ultraviolet radiation.
"Creams with SPF 50 and UVA protection are suitable for people who are at risk of burning. Now most of these products are available with mineral filters (they contain natural particles that remain on the surface of the skin and reflect ultraviolet light)," said Matveeva.
She added that you can also choose cream formulas with photostable filters that protect the skin for longer and do not lose their beneficial properties when exposed to ultraviolet light.
The doctor clarified that it is necessary to use such products every two hours after the skin gets wet or the person has wiped it with a towel. In addition, the expert noted that the sun is most active between 10:00 and 16:00 and it is better to stay at home at this time.
"Even in cloudy weather, up to 80% of ultraviolet light passes through clouds. Snow and water reflect the sun's rays and enhance their effect. Therefore, protection is required all year round, not only in summer," the expert added.
In addition, she stated that there is no safe tanning and sun protection should be used to gradually get used to it. According to her, protective equipment should be used immediately.
The doctor clarified that if any redness appears, a person should immediately go into the shade and cool the skin, after which moisten the damaged area with a remedy with panthenol, calamine or aloe vera.
On May 24, Alexandra Fileva, a dermatologist and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, talked about how to prevent, recognize and treat sunburn. Excessive ultraviolet radiation not only causes painful damage, but also increases the risk of developing skin cancer — melanoma, the expert recalled.
