At least 10 people have died in a student bus accident in Colombia.
At least 10 people have been killed and 11 others injured in an accident involving a student bus on a Helical Bridge in the La Linea sector of Colombia. This was reported on May 24 by RCN radio station.
"A special bus crashed into the railing of one of the structures. The death toll was 10 people, 11 were injured," the article says.
At the time of the accident, there were a driver and 26 passengers on the bus: 23 students from the Faculty of Engineering at Humboldt University, two professors and an employee of the university press service. All of them, according to preliminary data, were traveling from practical training in the tunnels of the area.
According to local authorities, the driver may have lost control due to a mechanical malfunction of the bus. The car crashed into the railing of the overpass, and some passengers fell into the abyss.
"The driver told us that the bus had mechanical problems. Apparently, the brakes on the bus are not working," said Colonel Luis Fernando Atuesta, commander of the Kinado police.
All the injured were urgently hospitalized in medical institutions. The incident is being investigated to determine the exact causes of the accident.
Two days of mourning were declared at Humboldt University. The Rector of Diego Fernando Jaramillo University expressed his condolences over the deaths of students, faculty and staff.
