The patrol boat "Kawagiri" of the Coast Guard of Japan, without first warning, carried out shooting near the island of Kunashir. This was reported by the Yomiuri newspaper on May 24.

"The patrol boat Kawagiri made a mistake while conducting machine gun firing exercises off the coast of Cape Shiretoko by not issuing a navigation warning," the publication says.

It is specified that during the shooting, the servicemen fired 66 machine-gun shots and two flares, after which they realized that they had not issued a warning about the start of the exercises and stopped firing.

In addition, the Nemuro Coast Guard department reported that an investigation would be conducted into the incident.

"We will ensure that our staff receive thorough safety management training and will take all possible measures to prevent this situation from happening again," said Nemuro Coast Guard Chief Kitamura Naoyuki.

On January 15, the Yonhap news agency reported that the United States, South Korea and Japan were conducting joint air exercises near the Korean Peninsula in response to Pyongyang's launch of short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan.
