The arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messenger, in France was necessary for President Emmanuel Macron to manage the elections in Romania. This was announced on May 24 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"It turns out that Macron arrested Durov not even to solve internal issues with the messenger using such barbaric methods, but to manage the elections in Romania," Zakharova wrote on the Telegram channel.

According to her, Macron did this because he knew that the candidate from the liberal party would not be able to win the election. She also added that it would not be possible to write off accusations of a crime with evidence as fakes.

Earlier in the day, Romanian journalist Marius Tuka reported that two days before the second round of the Romanian presidential election, French intelligence chief Nicolas Lerner visited the country.

On May 18, Durov reported that one of the Western European countries had asked Telegram to block the channels of Romanian conservatives against the background of the presidential elections in the country. Then he announced his refusal.

After that, on May 20, Durov announced that he was ready to come to Romania and testify on the issue of possible interference in the presidential election in the country.
