The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of disconnecting 20 banks from the SWIFT international payment system as part of new anti-Russian sanctions. This was reported by Bloomberg on May 23.

"The European Union is considering the possibility of disconnecting more than 20 banks from the SWIFT international payment system, as well as lowering the price ceiling for Russian oil and banning the Nord Stream gas pipeline as part of a new package of sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the EU's plan for sanctions against the Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 gas pipelines has already received German support.

It is noted that the European Commission (EC) is currently consulting with member states on these plans. A decision on the timing of the introduction of new restrictions has not yet been made, Bloomberg writes.

On May 20, the foreign ministers of the EU countries approved the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. According to the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, it affected about 200 vessels of the shadow fleet, which in Brussels are associated with the Russian Federation. According to Stanislav Naumov, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, sanctions against Russia are only a tool of complacency for the EU.
