The administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to get the European Union (EU) to impose trade duties on Chinese goods. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on May 23.

According to the newspaper, advisers to the American leader expressed dissatisfaction with European officials due to the slowdown in negotiations on the settlement of duties. It is noted that the negotiation process is hampered by differences in trade priorities between the members of the association.

"The United States has not yet received confirmation of the intention of EU leaders to impose new duties on Chinese industrial goods, which is a priority for Trump administration officials who seek to increase trade pressure on Beijing," the publication says.

The day before, Trump said that it was very difficult to trade with the EU, and therefore he recommended that trade duties of 50% be imposed on the union countries from June 1. According to him, difficulties arise due to powerful trade barriers, value added tax (VAT), unjustified lawsuits against American companies and other reasons.
