The administration of US President Donald Trump has introduced new restrictions for journalists who want to visit the Pentagon building. Now they will need to be accompanied by officials, according to the Reuters news agency.

"U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has issued an order requiring that journalists be accompanied by officials throughout most of the Pentagon building. This is the latest step in a series of restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on the press," the article says.

According to the agency, these measures prohibit accredited journalists from visiting the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense if they are not accompanied.

In the memorandum, Hegseth clarified that the department is required to protect classified information, the disclosure of which could "endanger the lives of U.S. military personnel."

The innovation has already been commented on by the Pentagon Press Association, which represents the interests of the press corps covering the activities of the American armed forces. They said the new rules represented a "direct attack on press freedom."

Earlier, on May 21, at a meeting with his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House, Trump criticized a reporter for asking about a plane donated by Qatar to the American leader. According to him, the journalist was not smart enough.
