The number of new dollars in the Russian Federation may be decreasing due to the global trend towards a decrease in cash turnover, as well as due to the peculiarities of the Russian market and the shortage of cash imports into the country. Yulia Khandoshko, CEO of the European broker Mind Money (ex Cerih), told Izvestia about this on May 23.

"In recent years, there has been an increasingly noticeable trend towards a reduction in the circulation of cash currency. In Europe, for example, €500 banknotes have almost disappeared from circulation and the fate of €200 is being increasingly discussed. A large—scale monetary reform took place in the UK - the old banknotes were withdrawn, now the largest bill remains 50 pounds. Switzerland has followed the same path," she said.

According to her, the goal of all these steps is to reduce the amount of cash and make the economy more digitalized. In the USA, the same tasks are performed. However, there is a difference between the old and new series of dollars, and outside the United States, old banknotes may raise doubts among banks.

At the same time, the expert noted that there is no legal import of large amounts of cash into the country in Russia. Therefore, there are fewer new dollars, and only more old ones.

"Another problem is that the latter are often accepted at a discount, or even not accepted abroad at all. Today, the difference in price can reach up to 500 rubles for $100, although this is only half a percent," Khandoshko added.

Earlier, on May 22, Spartak Sobolev, head of Alfa-Forex's investment strategy research department, told Izvestia that the ruble has strengthened against the dollar by 21.5% since the beginning of 2025, with an increase of 11% since the beginning of spring. In his opinion, by the end of spring, the dollar will cost 79-86 rubles, the euro — 88-95 rubles, the yuan — 10.9–11.8 rubles.
