Sovremennik Theater is preparing the premiere of the play "The Duel" based on the novel by Anton Chekhov

The premiere of the play "Duel" will take place on Another stage of Sovremennik on May 30 and 31, 2025.

Rehearsals for a new production of The Duel based on the play by Anton Chekhov are underway at the Sovremennik Theater in Moscow. Directed by Leila Abu-al-Kishek. Starring: Semyon Shomin, Marina Lebedeva, Ivan Stebunov, Dmitry Smolev, Maxim Tenyakov, Anatoly Kormanovsky, Evgeny Shishkin, Yanina Romanova, Olga Rodina, Veronika Amirkhanova.

The play "Duel" is Chekhov, seen with today's eyes. This is a story about how it's never too late to change your life and get out of a spiritual impasse, or at least try to do it. According to the plot, a psychological drama unfolds on the southern shore of the Black Sea, in a provincial town. A young official, Laevsky, ran away here with a married woman, Nadezhda Fedorovna, in search of love, freedom, and a "new life." But dreams turn out to be an illusion, love goes away, there is no money. Responsibility is burdensome, and the hero wants only one thing — to escape. His antagonist is Baron von Koren, a zoologist and Darwinist. He sees Laevsky as a parasite, a person harmful to society. This conflict develops into a duel — moral, ideological, and then into a physical one.

The premiere of the play "Duel" will take place on Another stage of Sovremennik on May 30 and 31, 2025. The press screening is scheduled for May 29, 2025.
