The United States and the European Union (EU) may face negative consequences due to the new duties proposed by American leader Donald Trump. This was announced on May 23 by German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl.

"I believe that such duties will not help anyone, but will only lead to the fact that the economic development of both markets will suffer," he said at a press conference with his Indian counterpart Subramaniam Jaishankar, which was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the German Foreign Ministry.

Vadefuhl stressed that Germany is focused on negotiations with the EU and fully supports the actions of the European Commission.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that it is very difficult to trade with the EU and therefore he recommends that trade duties of 50% be imposed on the countries of the union from June 1. According to him, difficulties arise due to powerful trade barriers, value added tax (VAT), unjustified lawsuits against American companies and other reasons.
