The political scientist assessed the EU's ability to support Ukraine without the United States

Europe cannot cope with the current volume of support for Ukraine without the United States. Alexander Kamkin, a German political scientist and senior researcher at the IMEMO RAS named after E.M. Primakov, expressed this opinion on Friday, May 23.

"What can the Americans do? They may say that we do not provide finances, but we can buy and give away our weapons and ammunition," Kamkin said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The political scientist noted that the actions of US President Donald Trump are situational and unpredictable, so it is absolutely not clear how the negotiation process will develop.

"In order to put pressure on Russia, it is quite possible that the Americans will go to continue supplies or finance them. Most likely, Europe, of course, will not be able to cope with such a volume in its current form," he said, adding that now defense plants in Europe are being laid at a double rate.

On May 1, Politico reported that the United States opposes the inclusion of a clause on further support for Ukraine in the final conclusion of the meeting of finance ministers of the G7 countries, which was held in Canada, RT reports. In addition, the American side also opposed the use of the phrase "illegal" in the document in relation to Russia's special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on May 20 that Washington had not stopped supplying weapons to Kiev, but there were no decisions on the possibility of forming new military aid packages. He also stressed that European states seek to continue the Ukrainian conflict, while the United States stands for its settlement.

Bloomberg, citing sources, clarified on April 25 that Washington had limited assistance to Kiev in the field of cybersecurity, thereby weakening its digital front lines and making it easy prey for hackers.
