US President Donald Trump said that it is very difficult to trade with the European Union (EU), and therefore he recommends that trade duties of 50% be imposed on the union countries from June 1. He wrote about this on May 23 on the Truth Social network.

"Our negotiations with them will lead to nothing! Therefore, I recommend direct 50% duties on the European Union starting from June 1, 2025," he wrote.

Trump added that it is difficult for the United States to trade with the EU due to powerful trade barriers, value added tax (VAT), unjustified lawsuits against American companies and other reasons. According to him, the United States loses $250 million annually because of this.

Trump said on May 12 that trade with the EU was more disgusting to him than with China. The President added that European countries also often sued American companies, while resorting to using their own judges. Trump also accused the EU of using the money received as a result of these measures by European politicians to provide for their countries.
