The main risk of insect bites, including wasps and bees, is the occurrence of an allergic reaction. Daniil Shchepelyaev, an immunologist and allergist, told Izvestia about this on May 23.
He explained that some insects can inject venom, like wasps, while others can leave saliva, like midges. In both cases, a pathological immune response of the body is possible.
"The main danger, of course, is allergies. Provided that a person does not have stabilization (the use of drugs, immunotherapy. — Ed.), that is, the body's readiness for an allergic reaction, [then] there may also be a toxic effect of the poison," the doctor said.
He added that if an insect bites an arm or leg and a person feels unwell, it is worth applying a tourniquet for at least half an hour to slow down the outflow of blood, apply something cold to the bite site and call a doctor. If a bee is stung, it is necessary to remove the sting.
"But you don't have to grab the sting from above, because the bag of poison remains there. <...> You need to remove it with something like small tweezers, crawling up from the side between the skin and this bag, because if you grab it from above, you just put pressure on this bag, it will immediately spray the entire dose, and that's it.. That is, it must be removed very carefully," the expert said.
The doctor noted that if there is no allergic reaction, you can apply, for example, a moistened lump of soda to the bite site. In a serious case, an ambulance must be called immediately, Shchepelyaev stressed.
On April 29, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported that more than 29.8 thousand Russians had suffered from tick bites since the beginning of the season. Residents of the Sverdlovsk, Kemerovo, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Novosibirsk, Moscow and Tomsk regions most often applied to medical institutions with this problem.
