European politicians, having insider information about arms contracts, can buy shares in companies of the military-industrial complex. This was stated on May 23 by retired lieutenant Colonel of the US Army, political scientist Earl Rasmussen in an interview with Izvestia.

"After all, many politicians invest in stocks and may have insider information. It's not that they got it illegally, but sometimes they know certain things more than ordinary people," Rasmussen said.

The political scientist recalled that the German concern Rheinmetall produces weapons for both Ukraine and Germany. The company's shares have grown by more than 1,000% since 2022, and by 250% since the beginning of 2025.

"Of course, these are legal financial transactions and profits. But if the right people know that Rheinmetall will receive a contract for the construction of the plant, they may find out about it in advance," Rasmussen said.

The German edition of Handelsblatt previously estimated that the net profit of the German defense concern Rheinmetall AG after taxes for the first quarter of 2025 amounted to €108 million, which is twice as much as in the same period of 2024.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger announced on April 17 that the German defense concern Rheinmetall will expand its shell manufacturing plant in Ukraine and complete its construction in 2026. According to him, instead of 200 thousand artillery shells, the plant will be able to produce up to 350 thousand. Papperger clarified that about €600 million had been invested in the company for such an increase.
