The US withdrawal from negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine threatens Kiev with disaster. This was reported on May 23 by the Slovak newspaper Pravda.

"Comments by the Vice President [of the United States] J.D. Vance's evidence suggests that the United States will simply stop worrying about what is happening. For Kiev, this will be a disastrous result in the short term," Kenneth McDonagh, an expert on international relations from Dublin City University, is quoted in the publication.

He noted that the telephone conversations between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin indicate the restoration of relations between Moscow and Washington. It is clarified that the United States has not announced its intention to impose new sanctions against Russia or to escalate militarily.

"This approach also reflects the Trump administration's view that the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine will not have a significant impact on U.S. interests as America's geopolitical focus shifts towards the Pacific region," McDonagh added.

Earlier in the day, John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, said that Trump has only a few options for resolving the conflict in Ukraine after a telephone conversation with Putin. The expert is convinced that Washington will rather abandon attempts to support Kiev and stop participating in the negotiation process, as well as provide European countries with the opportunity to end the conflict on their own.
