The hopes of European leaders to impose new sanctions on Moscow were dashed after American leader Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was announced on May 22 by journalist Jennifer Rankine in an article for The Guardian newspaper.

"The Europeans' hopes that Donald Trump could increase pressure on the Kremlin collapsed after a two—hour fruitless telephone conversation between the US president and Putin," the article says.

According to Rankin, instead of announcing new anti-Russian sanctions, Trump began to talk about the prospects for resuming trade between Washington and Moscow.

In addition, the author of the article noted that "European insiders" fear Trump's easing of US sanctions against Russia, because with such an outcome, "European unity" may collapse. According to their information, Hungary may veto the extension of restrictions on the Russian economy in July.

The Axios portal reported on May 20 that Trump, after a conversation with Putin, told the leaders of the European Union (EU) that the United States does not intend to impose new sanctions against Russia, as it is set to negotiate. The American leader noted that he did not consider the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions to be a good idea.
