Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder still positively assesses the Nord Stream 2 project, and also calls for the "correct" import of natural gas from Russia. This was reported on May 22 by the Bild newspaper with reference to a letter from the politician to deputies of the regional parliament of the federal state of Mecklenburg— Vorpommern.

"Let me start with my position on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which has been and still is positive," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

According to Bild, the former chancellor is convinced that Germany, as a country with limited natural resources, should strive to preserve and increase them by ensuring competitiveness in the global market.

At the same time, such actions require affordable and reliable energy supply for industry. Schroeder clarified that pipeline shipments are more environmentally friendly than tanker shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

On April 25, Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev called the possible restoration of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 pipelines a matter of the political will of the German and US authorities. According to him, there are many businessmen among the new US administration who know a lot about the economy and can deal with a deal to restore Nord Streams.
