Turkey will continue its mediation efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic means. This is evidenced on May 22 by the statement of the National Security Council of the Republic, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, following the meeting.

"The Council also <...> emphasized Turkey's desire to mediate in ending the <conflict> between Russia and Ukraine," TRT Global quoted the statement as saying.

On May 17, Erdogan already stated Turkey's readiness to continue efforts to advance negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as well as to preserve communication channels between the parties.

On May 16, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the talks agreed to present their vision of a cease-fire and to exchange prisoners of war in the "1000 by 1000" format.

Following the talks, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the Russian and Ukrainian delegations had agreed to hold a new meeting. According to him, Ankara considers the continuation of the negotiation process as an important step towards de-escalation and sustainable peace.
