Russia will continue to work on legislative support for multifaceted bilateral cooperation with Ghana. This was stated on May 22 by the Chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, during a meeting with the head of the Ghanaian Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, at the Nevsky International Environmental Congress (NMEC) in St. Petersburg.

During the conversation, the parties discussed the development of bilateral relations and expressed interest in strengthening parliamentary cooperation, including through the mechanisms of friendship groups.

"Relations between our countries and peoples have a rich history. They have always been mutually respectful, starting from the period of decolonization, when our country contributed to the independence of African countries, including Ghana," Matvienko is quoted as saying on the Federation Council website.

The interlocutors touched upon specific areas of cooperation in the economy, agro-industrial sector, energy and humanitarian spheres. The importance of international cooperation in solving environmental problems was also noted.

Bagbin, in turn, thanked the Russian side for the invitation to participate in the NMEC and spoke in favor of expanding the interaction of parliamentarians.

In January last year, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, during talks with Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen in Vienna, said that Russia was still a friend to his country. In addition, the head of Ghana also expressed concern about a return to the Cold War and "rivalry in West Africa."
