France and Saudi Arabia are working on a joint proposal to disarm the Palestinian Hamas movement and reorganize it into a political structure. This was reported by Bloomberg on May 22, citing sources.

According to the agency, the French and Saudi authorities intend to transform Hamas into a purely political structure that will still be able to play a role in the future governance of Palestine.

"People (sources — Ed.) say that allowing Hamas to retain a certain degree of political power will increase the likelihood that the movement will agree to disarmament," the article says.

Bloomberg notes that Israel may oppose this decision, since the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that Hamas should have no political power at all after the end of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

It is reported that tensions are already growing between Netanyahu and French leader Emmanuel Macron due to France's desire to achieve recognition of the Palestinian state by a large number of countries.

On May 21, Netanyahu said during a press conference in Jerusalem that Israel was ready for a temporary cease-fire in the Gaza Strip for the sake of a hostage release deal. According to the politician, Israel will be ready to end the war in Gaza if all hostages are released, the enclave is completely demilitarized, and the Hamas movement leaves the Gaza Strip.
