Some energy drinks contain up to 100 mg of caffeine, which is significantly higher than the daily norm. Irina Volgina, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia about this on May 22.

"Energy drinks can include caffeine, taurine and glucose, ginseng and other stimulants. And the concentration of these substances can be different. For comparison, one cup of coffee contains up to 12 mg of caffeine," Volgina said.

According to her, due to the stimulation of physical and mental activity, at first a person really feels that he can move mountains, and his efficiency increases - he is able to do some things faster. However, the activation phase is followed by a phase of fatigue and exhaustion — the body, having given all its daily strength in a couple of hours, feels tired faster and longer. He needs more time to recover.

"In Russia, there are certain requirements for the composition of energy drinks, so there are no addictive substances in their composition. But mental habituation to a state of vivacity is possible," the expert noted.

In this case, people start abusing energy drinks — they can drink two cans or more. As a result, all processes are over-activated. On the part of the heart, this can manifest itself in severe tachycardia and arrhythmia, blood pressure may rise, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may appear. In addition, it is possible to exacerbate diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, it may be difficult to fall asleep, relax, quite often there is motor excitement, a panic attack may develop.

"If there is a certain predisposition, such overloads can lead to acute cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and acute cerebrovascular accident. Such patients need emergency medical care in a hospital setting," the specialist warned.

She noted that it is difficult to offer a harmless alternative at such concentrations of substances. However, regular coffee or chicory can boost the body and, in the absence of abuse of these drinks, even have a beneficial effect on the body.

Earlier, on November 16, 2024, the endocrinologist of the SM Clinic, Yulia Vereina, spoke about the effects of excessive tea consumption on the body. As the expert noted, its excess can disrupt the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) due to a substance called "tannin". It can affect the microflora of the stomach, causing discomfort or pain after eating.
