- The Airbus airliner that flew to Germany returned to the United States due to engine failure
The Airbus A340 passenger liner of the German airline Lufthansa, which was flying to Germany, was forced to return to the city of departure, New York, due to a breakdown of one of the engines. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on May 21.
"A Lufthansa flight en route from New York to Frankfurt am Main was forced to turn back due to a sudden engine failure over the Atlantic Ocean," the publication says.
As the airline confirmed to the publication, the incident occurred on May 13. The crew of the airliner noticed an unusually high fuel consumption on one of the engines during the climb. After some time, when the plane climbed to more than 10 thousand meters, the device completely failed.
The crew made two landing attempts, the first one had to be aborted due to hydraulic problems. Later, the plane performed a second approach and was able to land safely on the runway, the material says.
The passengers of the aircraft and the crew escaped with a slight fright, the newspaper notes. The faulty engine control unit that caused the emergency has been replaced, and the aircraft is now back in service.
CBS News reported on April 26 about the emergency landing of a British Airways flight heading from Washington to London due to a possible collision with a bird and smoke in the cabin. It was clarified that the plane landed "without incident."
