On May 21, 102-year-old veteran of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) Miron Sukholutsky, who lives in Germany, was awarded a jubilee medal in honor of the anniversary of the Great Victory. The presentation took place thanks to the joint work of the Russian Embassy in Germany and Izvestia.

"During the war, my mother, father, brothers, and sisters were shot in the village of Gornostaypol in the Chernobyl district of the Kiev region," the veteran told Izvestia.

According to Sukholutsky, Ukrainians who defected to Nazi Germany took part in this act.

Earlier, on May 9, Izvestia presented 97-year-old WWII veteran Nikolai Rochev with a reprint of the newspaper's May 9, 1945 issue. He said that he joined the army when he was not yet 17 years old. The military enlistment office tried to dissuade the young man, but, as the veteran emphasized, he stood firm.
