- The leader of the AFD declared discrimination against the party's faction in the Bundestag

The refusal to elect deputies from the German right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as heads of Bundestag committees was a manifestation of discrimination against the party faction. Alice Weidel, co-chair of the AfD, told reporters on May 21.
On May 21, a vote was held in the Bundestag to elect the positions of the heads of the budget committee, as well as the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection. In total, the AfD planned to receive six positions of heads of committees, based on the number of mandates received in parliament. In the Bundestag of the previous convocation, the party was also not allowed to be elected to any post of committee head.
"We have nominated highly qualified and impeccable people who were not elected as a result of party political arbitrariness and discrimination against the largest opposition force, the Alternative for Germany party," Weidel said during a press conference broadcast on the page of the AFD parliamentary faction on the social network X (former. Twitter).
According to the AFD leader, by such a vote, the remaining Bundestag factions damage the country's democratic institutions, as well as infringe on the rights of more than 10 million voters.
On May 5, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that Bundestag deputies from the Left Party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Greens consider it necessary to stop state funding of the AFD amid the recognition of the party as extremist. Marcel Emmerich, a member of the Green Party, expressed the opinion that the termination of state support for AFD could be "one of the options for sanctions." In turn, CSU MP Joachim Herrmann called on the Bundestag to begin considering the issue of termination of funding as soon as possible.
