On May 21, Russians Kliment Kolesnikov and Kirill Prigoda won gold medals at the second stage of the Mare Nostrum international swimming tournament, which takes place in Barcelona.

Two-time Olympic medalist Kolesnikov won the 100 m backstroke with a time of 53.91 seconds. Ksawery Masiuk from Poland took the second place, and Adam Jaso from Hungary took the third.

Prigoda overcame the 200 m breaststroke in 2 minutes 8.38 seconds and also won the stage of the international tournament. Japanese Shin Ohashi finished second, while Pole David Vekera closed the top three.

In April, Kolesnikov received the neutral status of the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics). The 24-year-old swimmer is the current world record holder in the 50 m backstroke, as well as a three–time World Championships medalist and a two-time Olympic medalist in Tokyo 2020.
