Soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire near a delegation of diplomats and journalists who were visiting the city of Jenin in the West Bank. The Times of Israel newspaper wrote about this on May 21.

The footage of the incident, which was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Palestine, shows dozens of people, including photographers, near the army checkpoint in Jenin. The IDF soldiers can be seen opening fire in the air and the group running back to their vehicles.

There was no information about the victims.

Later, the IDF expressed regret over the incident, announcing the start of an internal audit. The statement emphasizes that the delegation allegedly deviated from the agreed route, which became the reason for the actions of the military personnel at the checkpoint.

"The Israel Defense Forces regrets the inconvenience caused," the military said in a statement.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir, said on May 20 that the IDF was expanding its military operation in the Gaza Strip, while not excluding the possibility of adjusting its actions if an agreement was reached on the release of hostages.

On May 18, Israel launched a new ground operation in the Gaza Strip, dubbed "Gideon's Chariots." Its goal is to establish tighter operational control of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) over the Palestinian enclave and destroy the command system of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas.
