- The height of the fence on the border between Finland and Russia will be increased by 1 m.

The height of the fence under construction on the border between Finland and Russia will be increased by 1 m. This was announced on May 21 by the Yle broadcaster.
"The fence's mesh will be a little stronger, it will be more difficult to damage and climb over it," said Lieutenant Colonel Esa Veikkanen, a representative of the fence construction project in Southeastern Finland.
It is specified that cameras equipped with artificial intelligence capable of distinguishing between humans and animals will be installed on the fence. There will also be speakers for instructing people.
The 200 km long fence is expected to be built by the end of 2026.
Last September, the Finnish border guard service announced that the barriers on the border with Russia would be higher and denser than originally planned. The total height of the fence will be 3.5 m, and the gates and barriers themselves will be reinforced. The changes will affect, for example, a 17 km long section in the vicinity of the Nuyamaa checkpoint.
