The head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, said on May 21 that the people of the autonomy would not allow her to be removed from power.

"I think that the Gagauz people will once again defend not even Yevgenia Hutsul as a person, but the status of Bashkan, because this is the highest official of the Gagauz Autonomy," she said in an interview with TASS.

According to Hutsul, even those people whom she had not previously sympathized with rallied around the head of the Gagauz autonomy after her arrest.

No government has ever allowed itself to deprive Gagauzia of its leader in this way, she stressed.

Earlier that day, the Hutsul declared its readiness to continue fighting for the rights of autonomy. According to her, the purpose of the trial is to "eliminate the inconvenient bashkan."

On March 25, Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport. Her name was found on the list of persons who are prohibited from leaving the country. Later, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and on April 9, the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest.

Then, on May 12, the court extended Hutsul's house arrest for another 30 days. According to her lawyer, Sergei Moraru, Hutsul may remain under house arrest until March 2026. The defense of the head of the autonomy, in turn, challenged the extension of house arrest.
