Likhachev promised to launch Kursk NPP-2 in 2025

Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom State Corporation, said at a meeting of the Federation Council on May 21 that the first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 nuclear power plant would be connected to the grid by the end of this year. According to him, the construction of the station did not stop for a minute, despite the proximity to the war zone.
"Last year, the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant successfully completed all plans for electricity generation. The construction of new units at Kursk NPP-2 has not stopped for a minute. This year, we are confident that we will connect a new power unit to the grid," Likhachev stressed.
He also noted the importance of supporting cities located near the fighting, such as Energodar and Kurchatov.
"Our main task is to ensure not only the safety of nuclear power plants, but also to help maintain normal life in the city, the smooth operation of the social sphere, education, and healthcare. We are succeeding in this, despite, in fact, the frontline situation," he said.
In addition, the head of Rosatom commented on the situation around the frozen Hanhikivi NPP project. He said that the decision to stop construction was political, and now the company is seeking compensation for the losses incurred.
"The decision is politicized, it is very difficult to comment on it from the point of view of common sense. We are currently in judicial mode. We are concerned about the political beliefs of the Finnish government, but not much. They must pay and compensate us for the losses incurred during the first stage of construction and the creation of the project," Likhachev said.
Maria Deuric, Director of the state corporation's representative office in Serbia, said at the Western Balkans Energy Transition Forum in Belgrade on May 14 that Rosatom was ready to offer Serbia projects for both small nuclear power plants (NPP) and high-capacity power units to strengthen the country's energy system.
