Trinity Sergius Lavra recognized as a victim in the case of the explosion in Sergiev Posad

According to the law, the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra was involved as a victim in the trial of the explosion of pyrotechnics in Sergiev Posad, as one of the buildings belonging to the monastery was damaged as a result of the emergency. As RIA Novosti reported on May 21 in the monastery itself, a civil claim for damages has not yet been filed.

They clarified that as a result of the explosion, many structures and buildings located near its epicenter were damaged.

"It so happened that one building owned by the Lavra was also partially damaged, and therefore, by virtue of the law, we were recognized as victims in this case. To date, Lavra has not filed a civil lawsuit. Recently, Lavra received a court notice about a summons to court in the status of a victim," the source said.

It is noted that after reviewing the case, the need for the monastery to participate in the trial will be decided taking into account the requirements of the law.

"The court we are talking about now is not about compensation for damages to anyone. This is a court within the framework of a criminal case. About the incident itself, because of which people died and suffered," the Trinity-Sergius Lavra noted.

The explosion at the Pyro-Ross enterprise in Sergiev Posad, where pyrotechnics are produced, occurred on August 9, 2023. The number of injured was more than 80 people, nine people died.

Emergency services named the human factor as the preliminary cause of the explosion. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case on violation of industrial safety requirements. In the case file submitted to the court, it was reported that about 4 tons of gunpowder were stored in the warehouse, transferred for disposal. The director of Pyro-Ross has been taken into custody as a suspect in connection with the explosion. Several other defendants, whom the investigation considers to be involved in the tragedy, are also in custody.
