The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, Eto Taku, resigned after saying that he never buys rice because he receives it for free from his supporters. This was reported on May 21 by the NHK public broadcasting company.

"On Sunday, he said that he never buys rice because he gets it for free from his supporters, and he has so much of it that he could sell it," the publication recalled.

According to NHK, the minister's remarks came after rice prices rose sharply in Japan. Therefore, He voluntarily decided to resign and submitted a petition to the Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, who approved the dismissal of the minister.

On May 19th, he apologized for his words about white rice. The minister explained that with this statement he wanted to encourage Japanese citizens to buy more brown rice, but the public misunderstood him. He explained that he regularly buys groceries, including white rice, which he sometimes gets from friends.
