The United States will not participate in the upcoming G20 summit, which will be held in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), due to differences of opinion with the leadership of the host country. This was announced on May 20 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"We decided not to participate in this year's G20 [summit] hosted by South Africa, either at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or at the level of the president, and this was largely due to some of these issues that they put on their agenda and which, as we think, they do not reflect the priorities of this administration," Rubio said, his speech was broadcast on the Fox News YouTube channel.

He added that in addition to differences in foreign policy priorities, the United States also disagrees with South Africa on issues of criticism of Israel and the rapprochement of the African country with China.

On May 14, The Washington Post reported that the White House had banned US agencies from working at the G20 summit in South Africa due to the "anti-American" land expropriation law. A White House official referred to a comment by American leader Donald Trump, in which he accused South Africa of carrying out "genocide" against white citizens, and said he would not attend the G20 leaders' meeting in Johannesburg unless "the situation is resolved."

On March 14, Rubio declared South African Ambassador Emrahim Rasoul persona non grata and accused him of hating the state and the American president. He stressed that the United States is no longer happy with Rasul's visits to the country.

On March 7, Trump himself announced the termination of all US federal aid to the Republic of South Africa. The American leader added that he would arrange for the rapid acquisition of U.S. citizenship for all those who want to leave the country.
