The sanctions imposed by European countries against Russia are not effective. French expert, head of the Geopolitique profonde analytical project, and researcher of international processes Frank Pengam told Izvestia about this on May 20.

"Actually, the sanctions, I think, are not working. When you see what is happening in Moscow, I think you are creating another system, an alternative to the American SWIFT system for payments, for everything, for all technologies <...> I think that these [sanctions] are not very effective today," Pengam believes.

According to him, it is better to promote peace between the countries, rather than continue the sanctions pressure on the Russian side. The expert also called on the states to negotiate to end restrictions and normalize relations.

Earlier in the day, Stanislav Naumov, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, told Izvestia that sanctions against Russia are a tool of complacency for the European Union (EU). He recalled that countries that faced sanctions policies from other states reacted appropriately to the measures: they symmetrically imposed retaliatory sanctions or adapted, building a new system of interaction with other participants in the global economy.
