The Permanent Mission of Russia to the United Nations (UN) has sent a note to the head of the organization, Antonio Guterres, asking him to pay attention to the harassment of Russian journalists in the West. This was announced on May 20 by the press service of the Permanent Mission to Russia (ex. Twitter).

"The Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations has sent a note to Antonio Guterres, drawing his attention to topical issues related to freedom of speech in the West, and urging the UN General Assembly to carefully study the section on foreign repression against Russian journalists and the media," the statement said.

The letter pointed to cases of harassment of Russian journalists in the West since the beginning of the special military operation (SVO). The permanent mission also added that it is completely unacceptable for alternative points of view to be censored and repressed.

On May 16, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, handed over to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) a new document with examples of harassment of Russian journalists in European countries. According to the diplomat, the document provides evidence of "systematic suppression of freedom of speech" in more than 15 states.
