Western countries by their actions pose a direct threat to maritime security. This was announced on May 20 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on strengthening maritime security.

"Despite the fact that almost three years have passed since the terrorist attack on Nord Streams, its organizers and perpetrators have still not been identified and brought to justice <... > We believe that it is your actions [of Western countries] that pose a direct threat to it [security], as well as inaction in issues related to the fight against impunity for specific crimes against cross—border underwater infrastructure," the website of the diplomatic mission quotes him as saying.

Nebenzia said that the Russian proposal was blocked by the Western members of the security Council, while Germany, Denmark and Sweden intentionally "cut off" from the Russia investigation. He added that this is the real price of today's statements by Western delegations about their alleged concerns about maritime security.

The permanent representative also recalled the attempt by Estonia and NATO aviation to detain the Gabonese-flagged Jaguar vessel in neutral waters, calling it a gross violation of the right of peaceful passage and an encroachment on freedom of navigation.

"In this regard, we would like to remind the newly—minted Baltic pirates and their EU support group that stopping a ship under any other pretext not explicitly mentioned in the Convention is, by definition, a gross infringement on freedom of navigation, the right of peaceful or transit passage," Nebenzia stressed.

On May 6, US President Donald Trump said that he knew the names of those involved in the explosion of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream—2 pipelines, and therefore Washington did not need to conduct its own investigation into the incident. He also rejected statements about the involvement of the Russian side in the incident.
