The situation in the combat zones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is deteriorating amid the widespread advance of Russian troops. This was reported on May 20 by The New York Times (NYT), citing the Ukrainian military.

"The situation in the war zones is becoming more and more tense and is only getting worse," the newspaper quoted AFU Lieutenant Pavel Velichko as saying..

According to the newspaper, civilians in the Ukrainian regions say they now rely only on themselves and "want nothing but a cessation of hostilities."

Earlier in the day, The National Interest magazine reported that the military assistance provided by NATO to Kiev was the reason for the decline in Ukraine's defense capability. According to the newspaper, Ukraine's situation could be "not so precarious" if the country relied on its own military equipment and did not rely on foreign aid.
