The Federation Council saw a disagreement between Europe and Trump on the Ukrainian issue

The obsession of European countries with Ukraine is in obvious contradiction with the pragmatism of US President Donald Trump. This was announced on May 20 by the chairman of the Russian Federation Commission on Information Policy and interaction with the media, Senator Alexei Pushkov.

He noted that European leaders were "stunned" after a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump. According to the senator, there are several objective reasons for this.

"First of all, they continue to proceed from the vicious premise, which has already been refuted by practice, that Russia can be strategically defeated <...> Trump does not think so," Pushkov stressed.

As a second reason, he cited the hopes of European officials that Trump would take a tougher line against Moscow. According to Pushkov, the European Union expects the American leader to take a confrontational position, which could allegedly lead to the re-establishment of a united anti-Russian front.

The third reason, according to him, was the different assessment of approaches to the conflict.

"Unlike the Euroliberals, who have embarked on the path of irreconcilable confrontation with Russia in the form of a "new cold war" and are therefore ready to impose new sanctions, Trump does not want to drag the United States into an acute phase of such a confrontation, dangerous and unprofitable for the United States itself. He does not believe in victory in either a hot or cold war against Russia," concluded Pushkov.

What else did Putin and Trump talk about on the phone for more than two hours 

Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation on May 19, which lasted more than two hours. During the conversation, they discussed, among other things, the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian president called the conversation informative, frank and useful.
