- The Russian Foreign Ministry noted Washington's understanding of the futility of putting pressure on Moscow.

The United States is aware of the futility of imposing new sanctions and further pressure on Russia. This was stated at a briefing on May 20 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"We are confident that sensible people are working in the current US administration who understand that pressure and even more outright threats against Russia are a futile tool," she stressed.
Zakharova noted that history has proved the futility of attempts to put pressure on Russia.
On May 19, US President Donald Trump, after talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, said that sanctions against Russia would not be tightened, as there was a chance to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. He noted that the Russian side, in his opinion, is ready for dialogue on the cessation of hostilities.
On the same day, Ian Proud, a former member of the British diplomatic service, noted in an article for Strategic Culture that Trump should not threaten Russia with new sanctions. According to him, Trump should not make the mistake of the administration of former US President Joe Biden and impose new sanctions if he wants to achieve a settlement in the Ukrainian issue and become a peacemaker.
