With any sprain, a partial ligament tear occurs, and with a bruise there may be a bone contusion and an impression fracture, orthopedic traumatologist and surgeon at the European Medical Center (EMC) Alexei Afanasyev told Izvestia on May 20, World Traumatologist's Day.

"It is extremely important to consult a doctor in the presence of an injury and undergo a correct diagnosis, which includes at least an X-ray examination, and best of all, an MRI scan. The fact is that, for example, a bone contusion will not be visible on an X-ray, as well as partial ligament damage. An MRI scan gives us a complete picture, and we can make a correct diagnosis and start treatment on time," the doctor explained.

According to him, a sprain or partial rupture of ligaments can lead to chronic joint instability, whether in the knee, ankle or others. To stabilize the joint, surgery or sufficiently long-term treatment may be required, which will take about six months.

"If we talk about a bruised knee joint or a contusion of the femur, without proper treatment, this can lead to bone deformity. And this, in turn, will lead to a violation of the congruence of the joint — that is, the loss of anatomical correspondence between its surfaces — which will lead to a deterioration in its function. In addition, this condition will affect the cartilage, which can cause the development of gonarthrosis, as well as bone contusions can lead to aseptic necrosis," the surgeon noted.

He stressed that no injuries should be underestimated. For any type of injury, you need to consult a doctor in order to diagnose it on time, make a correct diagnosis and receive adequate treatment.

"If any injury does not go away for more than two or three days, then this already means that you need to go to the doctor to get a diagnosis and adequate treatment. Again, if you see that immediately at the moment of injury you have a deformity, severe edema has formed or a massive hematoma has appeared, then you do not have to wait two or three days, you should immediately go to the doctor for effective treatment," Afanasyev added.

Earlier, on May 14, Olga Chizhevskaya, executive director of the Podiatry League Association of Medical Centers and Doctors, told Izvestia that in many cases, different leg lengths are formed in childhood and adolescence. Sometimes it happens because of bone fractures. The expert clarified that children are more sensitive to injury than adults. Damage to the cartilage tissue of their growth zones leads to a slowdown in bone growth in length.
