The political scientist admitted the cooling of contacts between the US and the EU

The disagreement on the issue of the Ukrainian settlement may lead to a cooling off between the United States and the European Union (EU). Political analyst Ivan Mezyuho told Izvestia about this on May 20.
He called it a rare picture for Western politics.
"There has been an imbalance of forces and relations within the Western bloc of states. <...> It is obvious that the disagreement between the European Union and the United States regarding the Ukrainian settlement may lead to a further cooling of contacts between Washington and Europe," Mezyuho said.
According to the expert, the European Union and the United Kingdom will be able to support the Kiev regime militarily for some time, but they are not able to completely replace military supplies and military assistance from the United States.
"Europe has the military resources to support Ukraine for a maximum of a year. But Europe hardly has the human resources to support Ukraine. Still, there is no real business behind the talks about sending European peacekeepers [to Ukraine]," Mezyuho said.
He recalled that there are often comments from various EU politicians that peacekeepers can be sent after the conclusion of peace or some kind of ceasefire agreement.
On May 19, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that European states seek to continue the Ukrainian conflict, while the United States supports its settlement.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump and Russian Leader Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation. After him, Trump said that sanctions against Russia would not be tightened, as there was a chance to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, the American leader admitted that the United States may cede its role to Europe.
On May 20, the European Union agreed on the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions.
