Deterioration of water quality in the Alatyr River is observed at the mouths of the Tatar-Velen-Ley and Insar rivers. This was reported to Izvestia on May 20 by the Rosprirodnadzor for the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Republic of Mordovia.

According to the agency, the researchers found no violations in the wastewater of the Kemlyansky distillery at the place of permitted discharge. It is specified that excess concentrations of harmful substances were recorded in natural water 100 m upstream.

"Analysis of natural water in the Alatyr River even downstream at the confluence of the Tatar-Velen-Ley River revealed excess concentrations of the following harmful substances in water bodies of fisheries importance: ASPAV, BPK5, iron, manganese, copper, strontium, phosphate ion," the response to the request says.

According to the report, the water in that place has a dark color, and there is also a putrid odor, which is characteristic of sewers. Further deterioration of water quality is observed below, at the mouth of the Insar River. According to Rosprirodnadzor, an increase in pollutants has been recorded in this area.

In addition, the water area, the coastline of Alatyr and the surrounding area near the village of Turgenevo were surveyed. It is expected that a decision on further actions will be made based on the results. All the data was transferred to the Ministry of Forestry, Hunting and Nature Management of Mordovia, the Territorial Administration of the Federal Fisheries Agency and the prosecutor's Office.

The State Veterinary Service of Chuvashia, in turn, confirmed to Izvestia the observed case of fish plague in Alatyr. The situation is under the control of authorized ministries and departments, they added.

The day before, the administration of the Alatyr municipal District of Chuvashia asked local residents not to eat fish from the Alatyr River because of its mass death. In addition, residents and guests were advised to refrain from visiting the river in the coming days.

Later, Izvestia revealed the connection of the environmental disaster with the Kemlyansky distillery and the Ichalkovsky cheese factory located on the coast of Mordovia. It was clarified that both companies were caught in environmental violations. According to local residents, there were 13 species of fish in Alatyr, but the number of survivors is currently unknown.
