Axios reported on Trump's unwillingness to impose sanctions against Russia

US President Donald Trump, after a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, told the leaders of the European Union (EU) that the United States would not impose new sanctions against Russia, as it was determined to negotiate. This was reported on May 20 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"The European leaders who participated in the conference call (with the American leader. — Ed.), they asked about the possibility of imposing US sanctions against Russia, but Trump said that he did not consider it a good idea, and stressed that, in his opinion, Putin wants to make a deal (to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. — Ed.), — the publication says.
According to Axios, the leaders of European countries were surprised by the reaction of the President of the United States.
The American leader stressed that, in his opinion, Moscow and Kiev can conduct bilateral direct negotiations without any intermediaries, since the parties themselves better understand all the details of the conflict, the publication clarifies.
Putin said on May 19, following a telephone conversation with Trump, that Russia was ready to work on a memorandum with Ukraine, including a cease-fire. According to the Russian leader, Moscow stands for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. In addition, the head of state pointed out the need to find compromises that would suit all parties.
Later in the day, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would soon begin negotiations on suspending hostilities and ending the conflict. According to him, he informed President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as a number of partners, including French leader Emmanuel Macron, head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, about his results of the conversation with Putin.
