The conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump is a positive step. This was announced on May 20 by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"There were no discussions with Russia until January. <...> This conversation is a very positive step that has restored direct communication that did not exist before," he said before the meeting in Brussels, as quoted by Reuters.

Rutte added that Trump's call to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky after his conversation with Putin was also a positive development.

Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation on May 19 that lasted more than two hours. During the conversation, they discussed, among other things, the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian president called the conversation informative, frank and useful.
